Availability of Building Permits and Inspections Under Executive Order No. 2020-70

The City of Kalamazoo will resume processing all building permit applications on Monday, May 11. This service is being resumed to support construction activities that are permitted to restart on May 7.

The Governor’s Executive Order No. 2020-70 revises the Stay Home, Stay Safe executive order to permit construction activities, work done in the building trades (plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and similar workers), and other work that is traditionally or primarily done outdoors. This new order takes effect May 7.

Individuals seeking permits are strongly encouraged to apply and pay online:

Printed forms may be completed and submitted with payment by mail to City of Kalamazoo, Building & Trades, 241 W South Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007 or placed in the drop box located behind City Hall on St. John’s Place (near Lovell). Completed forms can also be submitted via email to cokdevelopmentcenter@kalamazoocity.org. Staff will begin processing permits received by mail, including those received during the closure of facilities, starting Wednesday, May 13. PDF applications are available at https://www.kalamazoocity.org/building.

City offices remain closed and permits submitted by mail may be subject to delays in processing. For fastest service, applicants should apply and pay online.

City staff are currently only performing inspections of projects or issues deemed essential, including safety issues or inspections of facilities directly related to the COVID-19 response. To facilitate progress and completion of projects under construction, inspections may be completed by a design professional on site, such as an architect or engineer of record, to verify that construction has been performed correctly. Documentation of this inspection should be provided via email to the City of Kalamazoo’s Building Official, Roger Iveson, at ivesonr@kalamazoocity.org. Special inspections as defined in Chapter 17 of the Michigan Building Code can be performed by a 3rd party inspector with a report submitted to the Building Official. Questions about inspections can be answered by calling 3-1-1 (or 337-8000) or by contacting Roger Iveson at ivesonr@kalamazoocity.org.
