Mayor & City Commission Requests

The Mayor and City Commissioners are available to appear at events in our community, and the Mayor is authorized to perform wedding ceremonies in Kalamazoo County and can issue proclamations to recognizes events, milestones, and raise awareness. Please submit the form below to make a request of the Mayor or City Commission. A City staff member will contact you regarding your request. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to scheduling and other considerations.

If you are hosting an event and would like to request the Mayor's or City Commission's attendance, you may do so by completing the form below. They will make every effort to be in attendance, however please understand that due to the high volume of requests it may not be possible to personally accommodate each one. We respectfully request that you do not use the Mayor’s or Commissioners' names on any public relations material (i.e., notifications, invitations, agendas) until you have received approval.
    • Schedule's are subject to change. If this occurs, we will notify you as promptly as possible.
    • When filling out the request form, please be as comprehensive, detailed and specific as possible.
    • Requests are reviewed on a case by case basis. Once your request is reviewed, you will be notified via email of availability to attend your requested event.
    • Completing this form does not guarantee participation or attendance.
    • Public Act 211 of 1972 authorizes Mayors to solemnize marriages in the State of Michigan and in 2007 a new law authorized Mayors to perform marriage ceremonies anywhere in a county in which their City is located. The Vice Mayor can perform a wedding when the Mayor is out of town.

    • If you would like your Ceremony performed at City Hall, two rooms are available: a small conference room (which hosts up to 10 people) or the City Commission Chambers (which hosts up to 60 people). These rooms must be scheduled in advance. City staff will assist with scheduling a room.

    • The Mayor uses standard vows for each ceremony he performs. A copy of the vows will be emailed to the couple for their review. If the couple has their own vows or ceremony preferences, it should be provided to the City Manager’s Office at least two weeks prior to the ceremony.

    • There is a minimum fee of $100.00 (checks should be made payable to Kalamazoo City Treasurer. It is acceptable for the couple to pay more if they choose to (all funds support parks & recreation programming). This fee must be paid prior to scheduling your ceremony. You may mail payment or pay in person at: City Hall, 241 W South Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.

    • Kalamazoo County issues Marriage Licenses which can be obtained from the Kalamazoo County Clerk located at 201 W. Kalamazoo Avenue (269-383-8840) up to 30 days prior to the actual wedding date.
Proclamations may be issued by the Mayor to celebrate events, recognized achievements, or increase public awareness of worthy causes. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are honored at the Mayor's discretion and subject to the City of Kalamazoo's guidelines.
    • Proclamations may recognized a day, week, or month.
    • Proclamations for the benefit of specific for-profit organizations or policy organizations may not be issued.
    • Proclamations for anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, or retirements will not normally be issued except in extraordinary circumstances, such as 100th birthdays or 75th anniversaries.
    • Requests must be made on an annual basis. Proclamations will not be automatically renewed.
    • Multiple requests from the same organization will be considered but may not be honored in the same calendar year.
    • Requests that are similar to proclamations that have already been issued may be denied.
    • Proclamations may be issued during City Commission meetings, at events (schedule permitting), or mailed to the recipient.
